What is a polka dot pattern?

Polka dots are filled circles of one size, spaced evenly on a plain ground. The name comes from the polka, a dance that was a craze in the mid-19th century, when all sorts of goods were sold under its name.

Here each dot sits in the middle of a square repeat, so the dots line up in rows and columns. Turn the pattern 45 degrees and the same grid reads as the staggered rows seen on many fabrics.

How to make a polka dot background

Size sets the spacing: the distance from one dot's center to the next, from 6 to 600 pixels of a 1080p frame. Thickness sets the dot against that spacing: 0.5 makes each dot half as wide as the gap from center to center, 1 makes neighbors touch, and above 1 they run together and the ground is left as small four-pointed shapes.

Pick Foreground for the dots and Background for the ground under Colours, and Angle to turn the grid. Pattern switches to stripes, checks, grids, zigzags, waves or rings if you want another repeat with the same colors.

Can I save the dots as a moving background?

Yes. Scroll slides the dots across the frame at that many repeats a second, and 0 holds them still. Record it as MP4, WebM or GIF at 720p for up to 30 seconds, or save a still as PNG, JPG or WebP up to 2048 px.

The dots are drawn from their distance to each center, so edges stay smooth at any size, and the same settings give the same pixels every time. It all runs in your browser.
